26 May 17: Native American and Indigenous Studies Conference coming to Waikato in 2019

University of Waikato has secured hosting rights for a meeting of the world's largest group of indigenous experts.

University of Waikato Dean of the Faculty of Maori and Indigenous Studies Professor Brendan Hokowhitu says being chosen to host the conference gives New Zealand "heaps of kudos".

And with conference attendees spending twice that of tourists, Tourism New Zealand says the conference will deliver $1.7 million to the local economy.

University of Waikato professor Brendan Hokowhitu said being chosen to host the four-day the conference in 2019 gives New Zealand "heaps of kudos".

"It's going to bring really highly-regarded academics, and it will be important for our students to be able to interact with these people."

Hamilton will be the first city outside North America to host the conference, which Hokowhitu has attended since its 2007 inception.
