21 August 2015: Tourism hits 3 million milestone

For the first time ever, New Zealand has broken the 3 million arrivals milestone, hosting 3,002,982 visitors in the year to July 2015, up 7% on the previous year.

This is remarkable growth, considering it was only 10 years ago that we reached the 2 million mark. Read the media release here

Strong growth was recorded out of Taiwan (+37.5%), China (+29.5%) and India (+25.4%). Policy and Insight Specialist Steve Riley, who has just returned from attending the Tourism and Travel Summit in Australia, says “it is encouraging to see the strong growth from India. A recurring theme at the Australian Summit was that India is seen as a second wave growth market after the continued significant growth seen from the China visitor market”. Read more.

Visitor spend also up
Even more importantly, international visitors are spending more than ever before. The estimates from the International Visitor Survey for the year ended June indicates that the average spend per international visitor is up by 19% and total spending is up by 28% on the previous year.
