Hungarian President Heads Underground Down Under in Waitomo Glowworm Caves

It has been an eventful week for the President after arriving in Wellington on Sunday. This Waitomo visit follows the President’s visit to Rotorua yesterday, continuing the theme of natural wonder, although this time he headed underground.

Head Guide, Huia Davis, officially welcomed the President and his entourage at the famed pou (carved Totara pole) near the entrance of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Visitor Centre. Huia is the great grandson of the original explorer, Tane Tinorau, who guided visitors through the caves 126 years ago. The carved Totara pole of Tane Mahuta (God of the Forest) was carved in 1986-1987 by master carver, Tutunui Te Kanawa to mark the centenary of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves’ first recorded exploration.

The President enjoyed the cathedral-like underground cave system before a unique underground boat ride under the glistening ceiling of millions of glowworms.
