30 Sept 2016: Waikato Tourism Operator Takes Out Awards Trifecta

Waikato tourism attraction Hobbiton Movie Set took top honours in three categories awarded at last night’s prestigious Tourism Industry Awards in Auckland.

The Matamata business won the Business Excellence Award – annual turnover more than $6 million; the Tourism Marketing Campaign Award; and the inaugural People’s Choice Award.

The judges commended Hobbiton for becoming an iconic, must-see attraction in a short space of time. Russell Alexander, General Manager of Hobbiton Movie Set, says “we are excited and humbled to receive three prestigious awards including the new People’s Choice accolade awarded by our valued customers. It’s also fantastic to be recognised by our industry peers for our efforts in business and marketing. Hobbiton are proud to be based in the Waikato region, which is strongly emerging as an international visitor destination”.

The Hamilton & Waikato region was well represented at the awards with Tourism Holdings Limited also a finalist in the Environmental Tourism Award category for the Waitomo Glowworm Caves.

Hamilton & Waikato Tourism CEO, Jason Dawson says having two Waikato operators as finalists in these esteemed awards is great industry acknowledgement for the region. “This is a testament to the commitment, passion and hard work of our operators. The Alexander family and Hobbiton team have worked tirelessly to achieve their world-renowned status, so it’s phenomenal to see their hard work being recognised.
Having two world-famous icons in our own back yard, and such strong support for the RTO has been an integral part of putting the Waikato region on the map as an international visitor destination.”

Other industry achievements in recent weeks include Zealong Tea Estate being recognised as one of the finest beverages in the world at the ‘Oscars’ of the food industry - the Great Taste Awards in London. These prestigious accolades all contribute to a thriving visitor economy in the Hamilton & Waikato region.

The 2016 Tourism Industry Aotearoa Awards was celebrated with a black-tie evening at The Langham in Auckland with the Rt Hon John Key and more than 300 tourism industry leaders in attendance.
