The Northern Explorer operates a six day timetable, departing Auckland on Monday, Thursday & Saturday, and Wellington on Tuesday, Friday & Sunday. All departures have scheduled stops at Hamilton and Otorohanga (Waitomo) stations.
You’ll see so much more of New Zealand if you travel by train. You can sit back in comfort, and watch the scenery glide past through enormous panoramic windows. There’s a spectacular range of scenery waiting for you – rugged coastlines and rolling hills, winding rivers, towering mountains, virgin bush and untouched alpine landscapes – much of which you’d never get to see from the road.
And one of the great things about rail travel is when you get peckish, you can wander down to the café carriage and choose from a delicious range of Kiwi cuisine to enjoy as you savour the landscape.
KiwiRail Scenic Journeys are New Zealand’s only long distance passenger train service providers, operating three unique services across the North and South Islands; the Northern Explorer (Wellington - Auckland), The Coastal Pacific (Christchurch – Picton) and the TranzAlpine (Christchurch – Greymouth).
Travel in comfort in world class scenic carriages featuring panoramic windows, open air viewing, and GPS triggered at seat commentary. Each journey begins and ends at convenient locations for onward travel, and throughfare options are available connecting the North and South Islands by Interislander Ferry or Sounds Air flights. It’s an unforgettable experience, and the best way to see New Zealand’s stunning scenery.
A range of Escapes are also available including tours to Waitomo, Hobbiton and Te Puia. These are an ideal way to see the sights and travel by train.
