HAKA Māori Arts & Cultural Experience

HAKA provides a unique opportunity for the general public and visitors to experience a wide range of Māori cultural performances and interactive Māori visual art and cultural workshops in the very heart of the international award-winning Hamilton Gardens.

This event is being staged in support of the Waikato River Festival - He Piko He Taniwha!

Programme:
- 11:00am - 12:30pm - Interactive Māori Art / Cultural Workshops & Guided Tours
- 01:00pm - 02:00pm - Kapa Haka (Māori cultural group) performance
- 02:30pm - 04:00pm - Interactive Māori Art / Cultural Workshops & Guided Tours
- 04:30pm - 05:30pm - Kapa Haka (Māori cultural group) performance

Interactive Workshops:
Include: Weaving, Poi Making, Haka, Traditional Weaponry, Taonga Puoro (Traditional Musical instruments) and Māori art/design.

Entertainment:
A variety of traditional and contemporary Māori performing artists will be providing entertainment on site throughout the day.

Guided tours:
Guided tours including the HAKA Waka Experience (guided traditional canoe tours on the Waikato River) and the HAKA Hikoi Experience (guided Māori heritage tours through the Hamilton Gardens) will also be available.

Food & Beverage:
A limited number of traditional Hangi meals will be available for visitors to purchase at HAKA.

Māori Art & Craft:
Māori art and craft will be available for visitors to purchase direct from participating artists. Tā Moko (traditional Māori tattoo artists) will also be on site for visitors interested in receiving a traditional tattoo.

Costs:
There is no set cost or fee to participate in the interactive workshops or to enjoy the entertainment on offer. However, as this is a community event a koha (voluntary donation of your choice) towards our costs would be gratefully received and appreciated.

The cost of Tā Moko (traditional Māori tattoo) will depend on the size and level of detail of the work required. A nominal fee will also be required for the guided tour experiences.
