Matariki is known as the Maori New Year and is marked by the rising of the cluster of stars named Pleiades. Matariki is a time of sharing and celebration. Check out the range of 2018 Matariki events on in the Hamilton & Waikato region.

Matariki By Kahuranig - Pop Up Restaurant

Kahurangi kick off the 2018 Matariki Dish Challenge with an exclusive “Pop up” restaurant series held at the University of Waikato.

Karanga o te Tau Hou – Matariki Dawn Ceremony

Head along to this free event welcoming the new year with dawn karanga and karakia in Te Parapara Gardens.

Matariki Kauwhau Public Presentation

When: 22 June
Where: Te Kōpū Mānia Marae, Wintec
Te Kōpū Mānia and the Māori Achievement Unit extend a public invitation to attend the presentation by renowned leading wahine mareikura, Dr. Te Rita Papesch.

Matariki Kite Day

When: 24 June
Where: Hamilton Gardens
A fun day for the whole whanau, this even includes kite flying and manutukutuku making, as well as learning about Matariki, the Māori New Year. 

Matariki Community Art Exhibition

When: 27 - 30 June
Where: Twin Rivers Community Art Centre – Te Whare Toi o Ngaruawahia

Matariki ki Te Whare Taonga o Waikato

When: 15 July
Where: The Waikato Museum
The morning will include a Matariki storytelling session and craft activity, whilst the afternoon will feature Curator’s presentation and music performance. 

WHITI Open Mic Night

Matariki in the City
