New Zealand Cycle Classic

All the glamour and colour of international cycle racing will sweep past many doorsteps and farm gates of the Waipa region for the first time ever in January 2019.

The New Zealand Cycle Classic has been an annual sporting fixture for the past 32 years and is recognised as the premier international road cycling event in New Zealand.  Each year the Cycle Classic unearths new talent, and a number of those riders have gone on to win stages in the Tour de France and the Tour of Italy.

This race takes in the Hobbiton Movie Set as riders make their way around the stage, through the WWI soldier settlement of Te Miro, finishing with a tough climb to the peak formerly known as Maungakawa Scenic Reserve. The stage starts by McLean St Playground in Cambridge and includes a cluster of demanding hill climbs and which riders can expect more than four hours in the saddle. Between the start and finish of this stage riders will complete a total of eight hill climbs, amounting to almost the equivalent of a 2478 meters above sea level.
