Once a swamp used as a rubbish dump, the now wildlife refuge provides great bird watching opportunities with the likes of grey teal, kingfisher, pied stilt, white-faced heron, pukeko and black shag all calling the wetlands home.
The easy one hour Waikato walk includes a boardwalk leading to a hut suitable for bird watching as well as great views out over the wetlands and Te Waihou River.
