12 Sept 16: Tourists boost mid-winter guest nights

National guest nights for July 2016 were 6.9 percent higher than in July 2015, Statistics New Zealand said today. Record international visitor arrivals for a July month contributed to most of the increase.

"International and domestic guest nights both reached record levels for a July month," business indicators senior manager Neil Kelly said. "Guest nights for both main islands and each of the four accommodation types also set new July records."

For July 2016, compared with July 2015:
• International guest nights were up 15.8 percent, and domestic guest nights were up 2.0 percent.
• North Island total guest nights were up 7.4 percent, and South Island total guest nights were up 6.0 percent.
• Eleven of the 12 regional areas had more guest nights.
• All four accommodation types had more guest nights.

For the year ended July 2016, national guest nights were up 6.0 percent from the July 2015 year.

The trend for national guest nights continued to rise in July 2016. However, seasonally adjusted guest nights fell back 2.2 percent, after an 8.8 percent rise in June.

The Accommodation Survey collects data for guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday parks in New Zealand each month. Private accommodation is excluded.
