This month sees the launch of the HIGH TEA AMBER ALE - a perfect fit for both Zealong Tea Estate and Good George, according to Zealong’s Marketing Manager, Sen Kong. “There were a number of trials before we finally decided on this recipe.
We settled on using a combination of Zealong Black and Zealong Dark Oolong teas, to add a roasted char flavour which pairs nicely with the sweet rich malt profile of the brown ale and gives the brew a mild tea sweetness”.
Both organizations are proudly 100% home-grown New Zealand brands and this new collaboration speaks to the increasing global demand for the two brews – artisan teas and craft beers - among the trendy set.
The Brew Masters from both companies have been working around the clock to create a novel selection of pleasing flavours.
The beer has already been enjoyed by judges at the New Zealand Brewers’ Guild Awards, who awarded a bronze medal for the Hamiltonian collaboration earlier this month.
“It’s like having tea and biscuits all in one sip and is ideal for both male and female beer drinkers”, says Zealong’s Blend Master, Amy Reason.
As the label on the new 440ml can declares, Good George “used to say we were Hamilton’s most hardcore brewers. Then one day we got a knock on the door from Zealong, a local tea plantation where they do some pretty mean brewing themselves.
Rather than settle things with a to-the-death-brew off, we instead took the Sesame Street approach and co-operated. The result is a fragrant, oolong-infused ale”.
“We’re not afraid to challenge our customers’ taste buds now and then. We think our beer and cider range has something to appeal to everyone’s tastes, but collaborations like this are a chance to introduce new, interesting flavours to our customers”, concludes Good George’s Daniel McGregor.
Zealong Tea Estate and Good George launched their High Tea Amber Ale on 18 October 2017 at an exclusive, beer-inspired Brewers High Tea event at Zealong Tea Estate.
The Good George High Tea Amber Ale will be available at both Good George Dining Hall and Zealong Tea Estate, and on sale to the public through all good liquor stores and supermarkets in 440ml cans.

2. About Good George Brewing
World-class beer, fresh and original, and proudly brewed in Hamilton. A group of friends started Good George because they wanted to make beer that was truly world class. Now that this dream has been confirmed by winning numerous awards the next job is to spread the word. There’s a bit of chemistry to brewing, but you shouldn’t need a chemistry degree to enjoy it (or to read the list of ingredients). Beer shouldn’t be boring, but nor should it be intimidating or scary. Good George is about better beer moments. Drinking good beer with good people.
