Hamilton brewery Good George is toasting the success of its Sparkling Ale after it won a Gold Medal at the NZ Brewers Guild awards last Thursday night in Wellington.
The Frankton based brewery also picked up 5 other medals including a silver for its Doris Plum Cider.
The annual awards received over 670 entries from around NZ, Australia and the United States and medals were given out in 15 different categories.
The Sparkling Ale received the Gold in the International Style Ale section of the event at an awards dinner attended by 400 people from the beer industry.
Director of Brewing Brian Watson was especially proud to receive the awards for Sparkling because it was the Brewery’s flagship brand which was in everyday production. “We like to brew beers we like ourselves and we know our customers will find approachable and sessionable. To now have it recognised as a gold medal beer is just the icing on the cake”.
The brewery is in the process of installing bottling equipment and Watson says the Sparkling will be appearing in a 330ml bottle and will be on the shelves this summer. The beer is currently available in several Good George outlets on tap and in 1 litre Squealer Bottles and is consistently a top seller. It is also the beer showcased in the 150th Anniversary Beer.
After brewing its first beer in 2012 Good George is now sold through over 70 bars and wholesale outlets throughout the north island. A recent addition of more tanks has seen the capacity of the brewery lifted to 1 million litres of beer annually.
Managing Director Darrel Hadley says the key to the growth of the brand has been largely due to the experience and expertise of the team they have on board and winning these latest awards was evidence of that. “The brewers take a lot of pride in their work so I am stoked for them” The awards also was recognition that the Good George has cemented a place on the NZ beer scene as a genuine player and one to watch.
Hadley says Good George are intensely Waikato proud and the award would be welcomed by the many locals and fans of the Sparkling Ale which have adopted it as their favourite drop. “We like to say we are all about creating better beer moments and this is a beer that fits that bill. It’s the beer we recommend when you’ve been drinking regular beer all your life and are now looking for something with a more flavour without being blown away by the bitterness”.
Wellington is now the focus of the beer world for the weekend as 10,000 beer fans attend the annual Beervana festival. Good George will be showcasing its beers at the festival along with over 200 breweries from the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
